My topic today is about Men’s NCAA Championship of last night. I know I am a UT student but my heart will always be with the Memphis Tigers (unless we play them). So when Mario Chalmers hit that shot at the end of regulation and Kansas eventually went on to win the game, I was speechless. I had been talking smack to a lot of people about how we don’t get enough appreciation and now we were in the championship and couldn’t pull it out. It was a heartbreaker. It was supposed to be our year and we couldn’t make the free throws that every analyst had been criticizing us about all season. It was our year and now we won’t have Joey Dorsey next year. He was a great player and we all noticed how mature he got through his years at the University of Memphis. I am really hoping that Chris Douglas-Roberts comes back for his senior season and I am hoping that Derrick Rose comes back next year. They both are NBA caliber players and are going to make a lot of money, but if they come back, we have a good chance to go back to the NCAA Championship. We can really win it, but it is a long shot for them to come back because they are so good already.
It feels like it has been a long time since I wrote in my personal blog. I have to start this blog off by saying goodbye to a legend. I don’t want to officially say bye because dealing Brett Favre, you never know if he is really going this time or going to come out of retirement. But if he really stays retired, then in five years, he will be voted into the hall of fame on his first ballot. Now in NBA news, I wasn’t able to comment on the Cavaliers trade. The Cavaliers are looking good with the addition of Ben Wallace, Wally Szczerbiak, Joe Smith, and Delonte West. I think the best part of this deal is the acquisition of Delonte West because I feel like he is a very underrated point guard. I have been watching Delonte since he was in Boston and have loved his game since then, too. He is a point guard who can score if he wants too, but he looks to distribute the ball first. Another trade that was made was the trade that sent Jason Kidd to the enemy (yes, I hate the Dallas Mavericks and that was way before they received Jason Kidd). I’m biased against the Mavs, but I guess that was a good trade for them. Hopefully the Nets come together for the playoffs, so we can possibly make a run.
I have to start this blog off by saying that so far I am right about the Lakers. Pau Gasol is averaging 20.8 points per game, 8.2 rebounds per game, and is shooting 62 percent from the floor since he has joined the Los Angeles Lakers. The big news in the NBA last week was another big trade involving big Shaq Diesel. The Miami Heat traded Shaquille O’Neal last week to the Phoenix Suns. This trade was done possibly to keep them in the race with the Lakers. The Phoenix Suns traded the most underrated player in the league, Shawn Marion, and a promising young point guard, Marcus Banks. I actually like the trade for both teams, especially for the Heat. For the Heat, this was a trade to just get better because they have been looking horrible all season. With the addition of Shawn Marion, the Heat now turns into a fast paced team in the long run. When the Miami Heat gets a good center, either in the offseason or in the draft, I think we will be seeing a resurgence of an Eastern Conference powerhouse. Now for the Suns, I think they made a good trade, too. A lot of people are saying that Shaq won’t fit in with how the Suns run up and down the court. I don’t think Shaq needs to run with them. Shaq is just there because of his size. He’s going to free up Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire for a lot of shots and there will be a lot more three’s coming from the Phoenix Suns while Shaq is in the post.
Ok, I want to be the first to congratulate the Patriots on a perfect season because they had a great season and great super bow…… Wait! Whoa! No they didn’t! Ok let me change that around. Congratulations to the New York Giants for the most surprised defeat in Super Bowl history. I got to give Eli Manning his props because they game winning drive was the stuff of legend. The play, in which Eli escaped all those defensive linemen and threw it up to David Tyree, will live on forever. Again congratulations to the great road warriors (11 straight road wins. Wow!), NY Giants. But now let’s change our focus on the biggest trade of the year. Last week, the Lakers made a trade that practically ruined my hopes and dreams for Bynum to come to New Jersey. The Lakers now have, in my opinion, the best starting lineup the in the NBA by the acquisition of Pau Gasol from the Memphis Grizzlies. I’m from Memphis so I know what the Lakers are getting with Gasol. With this trade the Lakers are automatically my favorites to win the championship. I know my team is the Nets but the Lakers (on paper) are looking unstoppable. A good note for my team is that we did acquire Stromile Swift from the Grizzlies and I know how good he is. He is a good player when he wants to be and he should be a good fit for New Jersey.
I left my last blog off saying how much I loved Andrew Bynum’s game. In recent reports, Jason Kidd has requested a trade from the New Jersey Nets. The Nets are my team and I wouldn’t mind Jason Kidd being traded off for a reasonable player. This morning on Sportscenter, I saw that the Nets were looking at a possible trade with the Lakers. The Lakers would of course be getting Jason Kidd, but the Nets would be getting Andrew Bynum and/or Lamar Odom. This is just one of many trade possibilities, but it is the one that stood out to me because Bynum is a great big man and is the missing piece of the Nets organization. If the Nets got Odom and Bynum, then the Atlantic Division would show tremendous improvement. The Atlantic Division went from the laughing stock of the league to having the best team in the NBA. They have teams like the Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors, my New Jersey Nets, an underachieving New York Knicks, and the Philadelphia 76ers. We have a great division, but we just have underachieving teams. I am hoping that by February 21st (trading deadline) that we have Andrew Bynum or at least a good big man so we can become that championship caliber team that we should be. I will end this blog with a little chant: “Let’s Go Patriots, Let’s Go!!”
This is my first personal blog so I decided to write about something that I know about and I enjoy watching. My blogs will probably be most about sports. Since my first one is right after the NFL Championships, it is only right that I start with that. The Atlanta Falcons are my favorite team but this year my temporary favorite was the San Diego Chargers. They started out rough but they finished on a good run. Even though they were my favorite, I kind of want the New England Patriots to go undefeated, so Mercury Morris can shut up and stop making raps. Winning the Super Bowl would just be the best way to end this record breaking season. On the other side I can’t believe that Eli Manning is in the Super Bowl. He might be in the Super Bowl but he will never be compared as a better quarterback than his brother, Peyton. I’m not happy to see that Brett Favre is not going to the super bowl, so you can say that I am hating on Eli’s success. To end I am going to talk about the NBA. My favorite team is the New Jersey Nets and we are going to make the playoffs, even though we are in the same division as the Celtics and Raptors. Oh yeah, Andrew Bynum is the future of western conference centers and is going to be in the top 2 for most of the rest of his career.
